The business of fashion seminar at this year’s edition of Glitz Africa Fashion Week was held on Saturday, 7th November 2020 at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre. The successful seminar was in a form of a panel discussion, which was moderated by Akpene Diata Hoggar, the panelists for the first session included Roberta Annan, founder and managing partner of Roberta Annan Capital; and Tonyi Senayah, CEO of Horseman Shoes on the topic ‘building a distinctive fashion brand’.
On her part, Roberta Annan described herself as a partner to creatives and not necessarily a creative, her main focus is to liason with various stakeholders in order to make funds available for creatives, especially fashion designers to thrive. “I’m always looking at the creative sector with a developmental agenda”, she said. She pointed out, (quite significantly), that the major challenge facing the creatives in the fashion industy is “infrastructure”. Nigerian based fashion designer Ejiro Amos Tafari and Senegal’s Anna Toure of Anna Toure Beauty and Lifestyle Agency later joined on Zoom to air out their opinion on the topic.
The next session began in that order, the panelists were Mai Atafo, fashion designer and bespoke tailor from Nigeria and Chiedza Makonnen, fashion designer at Afrodesiac Worldwide. Ann McCreath, a fashion designer for KikoRomeo brand also joined later on Zoom from Kenya. The discussion was centered on being authentic and getting inspired to design and not necessarily imitate others blindly.
The seminar was concluded with a conversation on “how to prepare fashion for export”, carried by the Marketing Director of Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Ms Agnes Gifty Adjei-Sam.
The Q&A session followed through subsequently, it was in situation where people from the audience asked important questions which were on their mind and were related to the topic under discussion. Ben Boateng, directed his question to Roberta Annan, and got the right answer he needed. He asked about creatives in the fashion industry, and the issue of funding, which is very instrumental in moving businesses forward. See the images below!
